The evocative name of the Cardamom Hills is home to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, a reserve on the Kerala/Tamil Nadu border which is surrounded by tea and spice plantations. Lush forest, with a vast lake at its heart, is home to many indigenous animals.

VISIT TO AN ELEPHANT CAMP, you could help the mahout to wash the elephant; see how much the Elephant likes to be bathed. Enjoy a short ride on an elephant to get the best view of the stunning scenery.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES AND SIGHTSEEING

  • KALARIPAYATTU SHOW:

    The Shaolin monks have made their disciplined displays of Kung Fu world famous, but few know that their art was learned from Bodhi Dharma, an Indian monk who was a Kalaripayattu master. Legend traces this form of martial art back 3000 years and here, close to Periyar, you have the chance to experience a display of this most ancient of art forms.

  • PLANTATION TOUR:

    Thekkady renowned for their spice plantations, the Cardamom Hills are the ideal location to explore a garden where spices and other aromatic plants are grown. Learn about their use in the preparation of local cuisine and their medicinal properties

  • BOAT SAFARI:

    Board a small boat for the chance to cruise the lake at the heart of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. From the tranquility of the lake, enjoy the lush scenery all around you and keep a look out for animals that may come down to the water's edge – maybe a family of elephants, scurrying Wild Boar or the magnificent Sambar Deer..

  • FULL DAY TREKKING:

    This is a conservation-oriented hard trek taking up a full day, starting at 8am and ending at 5pm, covering 15km. The route passes through undulating terrains. Altitudinal ranges of 900 meters to 1300 meters will be covered and trekkers obtain glimpses of the lofty escarpments bordering the park watershed and the vast plains down below. Gaur sloth bear, elephant etc. are often sighted along this route apart from birds and butterflies. The trekkers will go with two guides and an armed forest guard. Vegetarian refreshments can be had en route. Intensity Level of Nature Walks: High levels of fitness are not required to do this program. However, you need to be in general good health and used to walking.

    HALF DAY TREKKING:

    Half day escorted trekking in Periyar. This is a conservation-oriented hard trek taking up half a day, starting at 8am and ending at 11m, covering 05km. The route passes through undulating terrains. Altitudinal ranges of 900 meters to 1300 meters will be covered and trekkers obtain glimpses of the lofty escarpments bordering the park watershed and the vast plains down below. Gaur sloth bear, elephant etc. are often sighted along this route apart from birds and butterflies. The trekkers will go with a English speaking guide. Vegetarian refreshments can be had en route. Intensity Level of Nature Walks: High levels of fitness are not required to do this program. However, you need to be in general good health and used to walking.

  • VILLAGE SAFARI:

    Looking for a drive somewhere off the beaten track ? Savor the lush tropical greenery en route. Experience the rural countryside of Tamil Nadu. Visit orchards, vineyards, green quilted paddy fields, sprawling banana plantations and vegetable farms with our professional naturalist. Learn about the local farming practices and techniques. Gain insights into the challenging local growing conditions. Expect meaningful interactions with the local farmers and villagers. Transport by private jeep. Trip duration: 3-4 hours. This trip could offer excellent possibilities for bird spotting.

  • Bamboo Rafting:

    Embark on a full day bamboo rafting and hiking trail. The program starts at 0800 in the morning and ends in the evening. The raft makes its way through the Periyar lake and you can see the forests on either side. Trekkers can glimpse the lofty mountains bordering the park watershed and the vast plains below. Two armed forest guards will accompany you on this trek. Intensity Level of Nature Walks: High levels of fitness are not required to do this program. However, you need to be in general good health and used to walking.

  • Bullock Cart:

    Get an opportunity to discover this region by Bullock Cart. Visit the farmlands through villages hidden in the valley behind the mountains of the Periyar Tiger Reserve in a bullock cart. The villages are rich in bio-diversity such as vineyards, diverse agricultural crops of mangoes, tamarind, onions, sunflower, jasmine and various other vegetables. The villages are a sight to behold and will take your breath away. The trained guides will explain the various processes involved in crop cultivation which is peculiar to the region. A bullock cart ride through these rustic villages is truly an incomparable once-in-a-lifetime experience

  • GAVI VISIT:

    Gavi, a quiet, beautiful and pristine forest haven. These evergreen forests are abundant with magnificent Wildlife including the tiger, elephants, leopards, bears, Indian gaur, sambar, barking & Mouse deers, lion tailed macaque, other varieties of monkeys, Nilgiri Marten and a lot more and Gavi is home to over 320 species of birds. Drive through park with a local guide to reach forest lodge in Gavi (1.5 -2 hours). Breakfast will be served then a walk through the forest (2-3 hours). After lunch a short boat ride on the lake and then drive back through park and return to hotel. (Lunch and tea included in the visit).
